Open Hand Publishing is a small, multicultural press based out of North Carolina. Their mission is to promote multiculturalism and positive social change through literature. Open Hand has a wide selection of books ranging from children’s literature to adult level novels, collections of poetry and political nonfiction.

Now that it’s the holiday season, and Kwanzaa is quickly approaching, Habari Gani: What’s the News? is one of their most popular children’s books. Habari Gani tells the story of seven-year-old Kia who celebrates Kwanzaa for the first time with her family.

Open Hand also has a series of five readers entitled “The Contributions Series” which highlights the lives of African Americans and other minority figures who have made an impact on American History, yet do not traditionally receive a lot of classroom attention. These make a valuable addition to our Advanced Readers series.

The “Contributions Series” is always popular during February’s Black History Month, but these books serve as valuable, educational resources year-round. Sylvia Stark: A Pioneer tells the true story of a former slave family who purchased their freedom and headed west in search of true liberty. Black Heroes of the Wild West features the biographies of nine African Americans who played majors roles in the development of the American frontier. Great Black Writers tells the personal and professional stories of six well-known African American authors such as Langston Hughes and James Baldwin. The “Contributions Series” also features Women of the Wild West and Pathblazers.
