EMPower is a new basic math and numeracy program that meets the needs of adult
learners. It enables adult learners to succeed in mathematics where traditional pedagogies have failed them. EMPower
is a comprehensive math curriculum for adult students and students in transition to college and pre-college or
developmental courses at the pre-GED level.
Developed and field tested by the Education Research Collaborative at TERC with support from the National Science Foundation, EMPower incorporates the
best pedagogies of the last two decades and integrates lessons from both educational research and classroom
The EMPower curriculum focuses on mathematical reasoning, communication, and problem solving with a variety of
approaches and strategies.
Units are organized by lessons, which include activities with clear mathematical goals and contexts that are
engaging and useful for adult learners. The lesson format guides and supports student learning.
The EMPower curriculum involves:
Relevant Content: Rather than focusing on memorization of formulas, EMPower helps students develop useful
math skills through engaging exercises that are relevant to real-life situations.
Integrated Approach: Algebraic, statistical, and geometric ideas are developed along with numerical ones,
so students progress solidly in all four strands.
Cooperative Learning: EMPower classrooms are supportive learning communities where students work in
groups, sharing strategies and mathematical results.
Built-in Teacher Support: The Teacher Book thoroughly guides the instructor with detailed support,
providing mathematical background for each lesson, facilitating guidelines, assessments, and notes.
The EMPower curriculum consists of eight books, each supported by a teacher book.
EMPower is being published by Key Curriculum Press, a specialist publisher of quality math materials. They will
be published during 2004/2005 starting in October 2004. Pre-orders are now being accepted. Download an order form here.
