This project examined how people with limited literacy skills cope with reading prescription medication labels and what factors influence their compliance with medication instructions. The project also tested alternatives to traditional written labels for people with limited literacy skills. The project illuminated how people read medication labels, the limitations of some other methods used for labeling medications and doctor/pharmacist communication with patients.
The study was conducted using focus groups of adult learners, mainly African American women, in literacy programs in North Carolina.
