"This booklet aims to assist newcomers to the field of adult literacy in examining what the term 'literacy' migh mean.  The staring point is a consideration of the term 'literacy' and how the meanings attached to it vary depending on the time period and the context of use.  Then, using the discussion of metaphors in Barton's Literacy: an introduction to the ecology of written language (1994) as a guide, some discourse of literacy are outlined and their influence on the adult literacy field explored.

These metaphors include: literacy as control; literacy as 'a crisis'; literacy for social action--transformation; literacy as techonology.  Some implications for practitioners are also discussed.  A list of some 40 references is included, with appendices of selected definitions of literacy, and traditions (from Ancient Greeks to the present) that demonstrate 'literacy as control'."
