From Sound to Silence is the extraordinary story of Rashida Abedi, a profoundly deaf woman from Quetta in Pakistan. She relates how she became deaf from meningitis, moved to England in search of a cure, without success. Subject to a deportation order, she was eventually granted the right to stay in Britain after a prolonged campaign by friends and supporters. She taught herself sign language and subsequently learned sign language in English. This book is a tribute to her tenacity and courage in overcoming multiple hurdles of deafness and being a stranger in a new country.
