The story of an East African resistance leader in the first part of the twentieth century.  Mekatilili wa Menza was an extraordinary woman from the East African coast, who led her people in resistance against the British colonialists in the early 1900s.  She was a member of the Giriami people who lived on the Kenyan coast north of Mombasa.  This biography tells of her early years and of the coming of British colonial rule.  Although men were the leaders in her society she nonetheless led the resistance the British and the forced labor practices, which enslaved their men and impoverished their society.  Imprisoned by the colonial authorities, she escaped and made her way back to her homeland and continued to lead the resistance.

Mekatilili wa Menza provides both a biography of a strong woman leader in a male dominated society, and an insight into the impact of the early colonialism in East Africa.

The author has taught literature and written children’s textbooks at the Kenya Institute of Education.  Her introduction includes a useful bibliography of additional reading.

The Lion Books are written by East African academics and journalists and published in Kenya.  The Teachers' Guide (640-0017) provides extra material and teaching suggestions for some of the other Lion Books.
